Please hold on, just… by Paidamoyo Gerald Manomano

Please hold on, just…
I dedicate the following poem to my mother, the woman who has endured so much.
My mother married my late father at the age of 16 back in 1964, her first born child died in 1968 at the age of 3, my father comforted her by marrying a second wife, and relegated my mother to the rurals where she became more like a farm implement, used anyhow. A story for another day.
My mother lost her daughter-in-law (suicide) in 1995, then her second child in 1997; my elder brother who died of AIDS at the age of 30; in 2003 she lost her abusive husband (my father) due to a car accident, in 2009 she buried her third child; my sister who died of after-birth complications at the age of 31

On 29 April 2018, my mother buried her fourth child, yes we buried my sister a day before her 44th birthday, she succumbed to fibroids.
My mother so far has buried a husband, 4 children and a daughter-in-law.
Now in her 70s, my mum’s health is failing, she is no longer that pillar of strength that I used to draw inspiration from, she has done so much for me, now it’s my turn to be strong for her. She is the one who inspired me to be a writer, she is still to read my book though (still to get funds and self publish). I still have the faith that she will read my books.

Please hold on, just…
For us,
The little ones,
Future leaders,
Daughters and sons,
All of us,
For them,
For ME!

Yourself in lights,
Myself by your side,
Your pride and joy in far countries,
Mixing and mingling,
Brushing shoulders with VIPs,
Gracefully gracing the occasion,
Oh please hold on!

Please just hold on,
For the promise,
Many promises,

Hold on,
Not in vain,
Not for others,
Not for sorrow,
Not for pain,
Just hold on
For joy ,
For merriment,
For testimony,
For YOU!

Oh please hold on,
Never let go,
For Me,
Just hold on,
Not asking much,

Will it be sweet enjoying alone?
Will the smiles be genuine?
Will there be happiness?
Will there be just a window for a peep?
Let it be this moment then!

Please hold on,
Just hold on,
For ME,
For us,
All of us!

Thank you God,
YOU HAVE given as asked!
